The Homework Club Program targets the moral, social and academic needs of inner city youth. Staff, volunteers and mentors build relationships with a student that calls for accountability while creating an environment that aims for excellence.
The increasing rate of student dropouts and failures in our school system challenged Youth for Christ to set year end promotion as the primary goal for the Homework Club. Periodic evaluations and incentives are built into the program, motivating students to keep on track.
The Homework Club meets Monday thru Thursday at the youth centers. Students register with signed permission by parents. In order to maintain an atmosphere suitable for study, only registered students who have their requirements for study are allowed in the Homework Room during study hours. It is the student’s responsibility to come with his/her study materials and homework assignment for each session. YFC provides supplies for special assignments.
Volunteers and Mentors assist with the Homework Club and must be respected at all times. Each student is required to sign a commitment sheet stating the following:
- I promise to attend the Homework Club.
- I will sign-in each day I go to the Homework room.
- I understand that it is important for me to help keep an atmosphere for study, and respect others who are doing their homework while in the room.
- I will come with my homework, needed study materials and school supplies.
- I will do my own work.
- When I am having difficulty with a subject, I will ask for help.
DE Youth for Christ is committed to:
- Providing a safe, quiet and conducive place for study.
- Computers and other equipment necessary for effective study are provided.
- Material and supplies for study and special projects will be on hand.
- Recruiting and training volunteers and mentors to assist the students.
- All adults submitting to a background check.
- Quarterly incentives to encourage students to do their best.
